Preface: I am a firm believer in the notion that, "little things mean a lot" as well as, "a little along the way is better than a multitude heaped" (This is not to say heaping-s should not be done because when done properly they're amazing fun! However, if you're stingy with your time or affection on a daily basis for decades and THEN try to heap... it may turn out to be a case of too little, too late.) Roughly translated as: "Do things from the heart, so that at the end of your time, people can't help but see the love your life represented."
Every year we would wait until after the Christmas holidays and then head out for the sales! Why wouldn't I want to spend 50-65% less on things we needed/wanted for the holidays?!? The boys were in charge of finding their very own Christmas ornaments that would represent that particular year to them. We would return to the house, have leftovers and hang the new ornaments on the tree. Then, sometime in January, we would pack things up again... each with his very own big box to contain all their ornaments.
Some of the choices were: Star Wars Characters... a Space Shuttle that plugs into the lights... Power Rangers... Winnie the Pooh Characters... a moving Noah's Ark and several kinds of animals.
The thought behind this is that at the end of their time as children, they would be out on their own. They would be young men working, going to college, starting lives of their own... and, as it does every year, Christmas would come around and they would have their own box of memories with which to begin to decorate... remember and, hopefully, smile.
