This morning, I happened across a You Tube video of, "Britain's Got Talent". I am by no means an opera buff, but must say, I LOVED it... it gave me goosebumps GaLoRe!!!! It also brought to fore a couple of questions: How many "books" have we all missed for the cover? How much richer might our lives be if we took the time to look past the façades of folks around us? The grumpy... the blind... the awkward... the myriad of humans who do not fit into Hollywood's opinion of "perfection". *
It is not they who need to adjust and become compliant with our expectations. It is we who need to accept and endeavor to understand, so that we may, hopefully, expand our realm of reference and learn to welcome people with the dignity they deserve.
*Side-notes, or Words to the Wise:
1. Do not confuse understanding with pity. People don't need pity. There is no real connection with someone if all you are doing is feeling sorry for them... and you will simply come off as a condescending, shallow prig.
2. Yes, just because they are seemingly unlovely, doesn't mean they aren't.
3. Use common sense. Yes, there is a very remote possibility that you will indeed find that you live next door to Jack the Ripper's great-great grand daughter or Lizzie Borden's great-grand nephew... however, bear in mind that a goodly number of [serial] killers have been good looking.
4. Having said all this, thankfully, there is a much larger percentage of good in the world... and life is way too short not to, at least, peek behind the cover of some of the "books" within your reach. It is quite possible you may also gain an understanding of the perfection of imperfection.
